‘The Year of Innocence’ is a contemporary tale about the destiny many young women from the Chinese countryside still face today.
In a rural village in present-day China, a young married woman (Rain) becomes the victim of scandalous gossip concerning the life she led a few years earlier in a much bigger city where western values are fast replacing traditional culture. Her husband (Guo), a teacher, refuses to believe her pleas that she's not guilty of rumours she traded sex for money. Ashamed, and unable to cope with the humiliation and his rejection, Rain takes her own life. Following her tragic death, Guo becomes convinced of her innocence. Wishing to atone for misjudging his wife, and to find those responsible for the spreading the lies, he sets out on a journey to retrace the path she took seven years before. At that time, Rain was just a naive small-town girl with honorable dreams for a better life by earning money in the city to support her family. Seeking to learn what really happened to Rain and why slanderous falsehoods about her were spread, Guo tracks down three of the people closest to her during that time; an old uncle (Sanshu), who helped her get settled and find work, a childhood best friend (Lily), her roommate and co-worker, and her first love (Lu), a musician and student. As the truths about Rain are revealed, Guo strives to get those who started the rumours to take back their accusations. In this way, he hopes to make up for his broken trust and redeem Rain’s honour, dignity and good name. ‘The Year of Innocence’ is directed by Zhang Li and is a production of the Canadian Fair King International Media Group.
